Darrell Gwynn:At Full Throttle

Author: Erik Arneson

A Top Fuel drag racer lives his life four seconds at time. It's a wild, unpredictable ride that needs 8,000 horsepower to get started and multiple parachutes just to slow down. But in those four seconds, decisions are made, victories mean everything and failure sends you home — sometimes for good.
At the age of seven Darrell was piloting a scaled-down dragster designed and built by his father, Jerry. By 17, he had earned his first professional competition license, and by 1990, Darrell had worked his way through the ranks to become one of America’s hottest NHRA Top Fuel drag racers.

Then, on Easter Sunday 1990, his car broke apart in a violent fireball at more than 200 mph during an exhibition run. Darrell suffered a broken neck, lost his lower left arm, and retained only limited use of his right arm. Confined to a wheelchair, he would never race again. But rather than slow Darrell down, the disabilities became yet another challenge that he was determined to meet.

Darrell Gwynn: At Full Throttle is the personal and revealing story of Darrell’s life on and off the drag strip. Written by award-winning drag racing journalist Erik Arneson, the book includes Darrell’s own detailed accounts of his most important races, and the ultimate insider’s perspective on the technology and teamwork behind a winning Top Fuel car. And it’s just as candid in describing Darrell’s long struggle to recover from the injuries that ended his career as a driver but also led to a new role as a team owner, businessman, philanthropist, and loving father.

Beautifully illustrated with hundreds of color photographs—including dozens of previously unpublished shots from family scrapbooks— Darrell Gwynn: At Full Throttlestarts by telling the story of one man’s path to the top of his sport, and finishes with a second, more courageous journey back from devastating injuries to a new, full life.
