Dale Earnhardt:Ready to Rumble Poster

In 1996 Sam Bass created a portrait of Dale Earnhardt in "Ready..." that today is considered a classic by The Intimidator's fans. It was painted for Bristol Motor Speedway to use on the Food City 500 souvenir race program cover. In the illustration, Earnhardt puts out the same macho vibe as the boy in high school who has the fastest car and knows it; the neighborhood tough guy who owns a street corner and wants everybody else to know it; and the veteran Wild West gunslinger no one in the saloon wants to make eye contact with.

Psyching-out the competition plays a big part in racing, probably in equal proportion to luck, coordination and skill. Projecting supreme confidence was a science Dale Earnhardt raised to an art form throughout his career.

"I wanted to portray Dale as having the ease of confidence and certainty about his place on the track. For this painting, I saw him as being ready to go, ready to race anybody at any time, taking on all comers." -Sam Bass
